Reykjavik Open: Shulman, Jayakumar and Norowitz move to 4/5

reykjavik open bannerFormer US champion GM Yuri Shulman recovered after the yesterday’s loss against China’s prodigy Yu Yangyi and defeated another Danish IM, Nikolaj Mikkelsen, to move to the shared 8th place, half a point behind the leading pack.

Shulman’s pairing continues to follow the pattern and for Saturday he is matched against another Chinese superstar, Ding Liren, only this time with white pieces.

FM Adarsh Jayakumar continued the string of excellent results, and after grounding GM Ivan Sokolov and drawing GM Esen Baris, he scored another upset victory against the Icelandic champion GM Throstur Thorhallsson. Jayakumar plays the Greek GM Stelios Halkias in the next round.

Yaacov Norowitz beat the Ukrainian GM Mikhailo Oleksienko with black pieces to join Shulman and Jayakumar on 4,0/5 points each. Norowitz takes on GM Marcin Dziuba next, the same Polish Grandmaster that downed IM John Bartholomew in today’s round.

IM Irina Krush held the higher rated GM Bassem Amin (EGY 2631) to a draw, while IM Erik Andrew Kislik split the point with the reigning China Women’s Champion WGM Huang Qian. Krush and Kislik are on 3,5/5 points each.

Bartholomew and IM Vladimir Prosviriakov are on 3,0/5 points each.

The amateur players Stephen Jablon, Gregory Hisnay, Kent Evenson and Mikhail Kruglyak are all with 2 points after 5 rounds.
